Dividing a Hyperion Planning Application, Expanding the Hyperion Footprint to Forecast on the Business’ Customer Categories

Vantiv

Vantiv LLC (formerly Fifth Third Processing Solutions) is an Ohio-based payment processing and technology provider. One of the largest merchant acquirers, it handles PIN transactions, fraud detection and management, and credit card issuing while processing billions of payment transactions, accounting for over $700 billion in volume annually.

The engagement was about more than implementing technology. Vantiv needed a solution that could support real operational complexity while still giving finance and business leaders information they could trust.

MindStream Analytics approached the work with a focus on long-term usability, helping Vantiv improve planning discipline, reduce friction in reporting, and create a stronger decision-support environment.

The Challenge:

Vantiv’s corporate Finance group wanted to be able to forecast at a more granular level: to plan for transactions by customer types, and, in some instances, by their largest clients.

The corporate team developed a plan to divide their original Oracle Hyperion planning application into several new applications. This issue mattered because it affected how Vantiv could plan, report, and respond to changing business demands across the organization.

They also sought to improve error-prone Excel processes. This issue mattered because it affected how Vantiv could plan, report, and respond to changing business demands across the organization.

During the course of this business initiative, it was imperative that the Hyperion environment remain stable throughout various migrations and upgrades. This issue mattered because it affected how Vantiv could plan, report, and respond to changing business demands across the organization.

The Solution

MindStream was engaged to provide advice and consulting services as Vantiv embarked upon expanding the current Planning environment and dividing it to reflect their various Merchant Lines of Business.

MindStream helped the company begin to use driver-based budgeting processes. This step helped create a more practical and scalable operating model so finance teams could rely on the system instead of working around it.

MindStream created a separate Planning application for each of their LOBs. This step helped create a more practical and scalable operating model so finance teams could rely on the system instead of working around it.

Each application fed into a single Essbase Aggregate Storage Option cube for reporting and consolidating the applications into a single view. This step helped create a more practical and scalable operating model so finance teams could rely on the system instead of working around it.

The Result

Vantiv was able to smoothly transition from a single Hyperion application to a multitude of applications, while maintaining annual forecast and plan, but increasing reporting capabilities.

Error-prone Excel processes were replaced with automation rules and tools. In practical terms, that meant better visibility, faster turnaround, and a stronger foundation for ongoing planning and analysis.

Vantiv was able to expertly complete new application builds, develop optimization tools, and maintain a stable Oracle Hyperion environment for their Finance applications. In practical terms, that meant better visibility, faster turnaround, and a stronger foundation for ongoing planning and analysis.

Throughout changing design and build requirements, MindStream supported each change with automation enhancements and migration support. In practical terms, that meant better visibility, faster turnaround, and a stronger foundation for ongoing planning and analysis.

With reporting flexibility, Vantiv is now able to forecast and budget toward a richer, more granular level for their unique marketplace of merchants and customers. In practical terms, that meant better visibility, faster turnaround, and a stronger foundation for ongoing planning and analysis.

These outcomes show why organizations choose MindStream Analytics when they need more than software alone. The project for Vantiv required technical depth, process design, and close coordination with stakeholders so the final solution actually supported day-to-day decision-making.

By aligning Oracle capabilities with the way Vantiv wanted to run finance, reporting, and planning, MindStream helped turn a difficult process into one that was more stable, repeatable, and useful for leadership.
